Hello Reader, "You are a brand. You are in charge of your brand." Tom Peters said it best in his 1997 article, The Brand Called You. Today, that statement is more relevant than ever for independent consultants. Peters also predicted that “There is a chance that at some point during your career, you will be consulting.” The reality is Peters saw something about the future of work that many people didn’t see. Every year the number of people who decide to become an independent worker, by choice or necessity, increases. I don’t have great statistics on the growth of independent consultants over the last five years but according to MBO partners between 2020 and 2024, the number if independent workers grow from 13.6 million to 27.7 million. Not a number to ignore. What that means is more than ever, it’s critical to market yourself. The focus on excellence is now on you-how you demonstrate your relevance, credibility, and the value you bring to clients with your services. Oh, you might hear to stand out you need to write a book or host a podcast. I wouldn’t disagree that books, podcast, videos, speaking engagements, and webinars to name a few aid in marketing you but there are several low cost, in both time and money, actions every independent consultant can take to help them market themselves. This week’s question: With the changing world, how are you Marketing You so that you stand out?
