Hello Reader Good relationships, NO great relationships, don’t happen by accident. They take time and commitment. Think about your personal relationships. Staying connected to a close friend takes effort. Even family relationships can drift if you don't make the effort to reach out. It’s no different in business. As an independent consultant, you make relationship commitments too. If you are working on an engagement, you make a commitment to the client and if the engagement includes a team, you make a commitment not to abandon the team. As you connect with new people and create new professional relationships, you work hard to create something real and lasting because... trusted relationships don’t happen overnight. They take time and commitment. In today’s world it is so easy to look like you are networking. You can be so busy networking everywhere and nowhere. You can spend hours on social media, attending networking events, or sending emails building acquaintances but not getting to know anyone nor helping them to get to know you. You may be visible, but not known. Not being known leads to no clients. As an independent consultant or a consultant in a small consulting business, you don’t need a lot of clients, but you do need a few good ones. That means you need to focus on connecting with a few people that fit your ideal client criteria. These are the people that become clients and partners. These are the people that connect you with other people who might be interested in what you have to offer. These are the people that will help you get to where you want to be. Remember: acquaintances come and go and although an acquaintance might hire you in general they don't.
