Why More Activity May Not Be the Answer

Last week I shared why I made the decision to divide Consulting Mastery into two programs.: Business Core and Growth.

This week let me focus on:

When a consulting business slows down, revenue may become inconsistent and it can be hard to see where the next client will come from. The natural instinct is often to do more.

  • You network everywhere.
  • You create more content.
  • You provide more services.
  • You have more coffee chats with anyone who will listen.

Then you look at your bank account and it is not growing. You're exhausted and frustrated.

Sometimes more activity helps. But often, more activity does not solve the real problem.

The issue isn't your experience, your expertise, or your work ethic. What holds you back is often the lack of clarity around the foundation of your business: your Business Core.

What Do I Mean by Business Core

Your Business Core includes three connected areas:

Your Focus: The problem you Want to be known for solving and Why that problem matters.
Your Ideal Client: The person Who you are best positioned to serve, where to find them, and whether they care enough about the problem you want to solve to seek your help.
Your Service Offering: How you explain your Point of View, your philosophy for helping clients move from problem to results and the services people can engage you for.

When these areas are unclear or out of alignment, everything else becomes harder.

  • It becomes harder to explain what you do.
  • It becomes harder to know who to reach out to.
  • It becomes harder to build trusted relationships.
  • It becomes harder to have strong conversations.
  • It even becomes harder to write proposals that reflect the value of your work and how you solve a client's problem.

Business Core for Independent Consultants is designed to help you clarify and align these three areas so you can build your consulting business on a stronger foundation.
