7 Guidelines for Consultants to Give and Get New Clients


Hello Reader

As independent consultants, we’re told: Give first. Help others. It’ll all come back to you.

And yes, giving and giving generously matters.

But here’s the truth:

Giving content or referrals without a strategy leads to frustration and burnout, not clients.

Oh, you might get a few good connections, but not before your stress level explodes.

I’ve watched more than one smart, capable consultant

  • Share insights
  • Make introductions
  • Offer free advice
  • Post content on LinkedIn consistently

and still struggle to build meaningful relationships or get referrals that lead to new clients.

It’s not about giving more. It’s about giving value and giving it strategically.

The Give and Grow Guidelines were created by me for me. BUT, I also share them when asked this one question:

How much should I give?

The seven guidelines help me

  • Remain focused on giving on the right people
  • Connect with value that ties to my point of view, the Consultant’s Blueprint©
  • Create momentum without draining my energy or increasing my frustration level.

Two of the guidelines are:

Take a Strategic Approach to Giving
Be clear on what you give and to who. Ensure your giving ties back to the problems you solve and the results you achieve.

Deliver Value Without Pressure
Give because it’s meaningful and aligned with what you do and not because you’re hoping they’ll become a client tomorrow. It takes time to build a relationship. Maybe someday they will become a client, just not right now.
