Hello Reader, When you're not creating clients as consistently as you'd like, how do you decide what needs to change? Do you try another marketing tactic, or do you have a framework that helps you understand how the different parts of your consulting business work together? I didn't fully appreciate how important a framework could be to building a business of your own until I began working with independent consultants. You see I had my own framework, but I found many, not all, experienced professionals did not. When experienced professionals start independent consulting businesses, expertise is rarely what they lack. They know how to solve problems. But building a profitable consulting business that creates clients and generates consistent revenue presents a new challenge for many. Over the years, I saw capable independent consultants achieve very different results. Some built profitable businesses with a clear direction. Others worked hard, pursued one recommendation after another, and still struggled to create clients and generate consistent revenue. I wanted to help them and I was sure there had to be something out there that I could refer to them. I searched for books, videos, and other resources that could provide guidance. I found plenty of recommendations: attend more networking events, create more content to market yourself, add more services, and the list goes on. What I couldn't find was a clear explanation of how these activities worked together, how decisions in one area affected another, or which activities really deserved attention. And that wasn't acceptable to me. I wanted to understand why some succeeded while others struggled or failed. So I spoke with independent consultants who had succeeded and others who had struggled, failed, or given up. Some who struggled had tried to do everything people recommended. Those making progress understood the bigger picture. They made deliberate decisions about what to pursue and, just as importantly, what to leave alone. Their experiences reinforced what my years in management and consulting had taught me:
Drawing on those conversations, my research, and professional experience, I spent several years developing and refining The Independent Consultant's Blueprint©. The result is a practical, adaptable framework covering the essential elements of building and growing an independent consulting business. My objective was to show how those elements connect and help consultants make informed decisions, focus their efforts, and take action to build businesses that work for them. The Five Connected Pillars The Independent Consultant's Blueprint© connects five essential pillars of an independent consulting business. Each addresses a critical aspect of the business, but none operates independently. Decisions and actions in one pillar can influence the others.
Clarify Your Business Core: Define the problem you want to be known for solving; identify, find, and validate your Ideal Client; and develop your differentiating approach through your point of view, methodology, and services.
Build Awareness: Establish credibility and build awareness of who you are, the problem you solve, and the value you bring.
Develop Trusted Relationships: Develop trusted relationships with prospective clients, potential partners, and referral sources while strengthening existing client relationships.
Obtain Engagement Commitment: Work with prospective clients to understand their problems, agree on desired outcomes and approach, and secure a paid engagement.
Deliver with Excellence: Deliver the agreed-upon services, achieve client outcomes, and continue developing the client relationship.
What consultants often overlook is that decisions don't stand alone. A decision in one area may require reconsidering earlier decisions and can shape those yet to come. For example, what you learn about your Ideal Client may require you to reconsider the services you offer, how you build awareness, and the relationships you develop. What you learn during a client engagement may lead you to refine your methodology or reconsider the problems you want to solve. These connections also matter when something isn't working. If your marketing and networking activities generate conversations but few engagements, doing more of the same may not solve the problem. You may need to reconsider whether you're reaching the right people, addressing a problem they value enough to engage outside expertise, or communicating how your approach differs. Rather than automatically adding more activities, the Blueprint helps you examine the business as a whole, identify what deserves attention, and make informed decisions about what to do next. The Blueprint provides a starting point for developing your own business framework.
Adapt it to reflect the problems you solve, the clients you serve, and the business you want to build. Return to the Blueprint when you need to examine what's not working, assess your results, and refine your decisions and actions as you learn.
The Independent Consultant's Blueprint© is my philosophy and it is framework that guides everything I do—from advising and program development to writing, videos, and speaking. My objective in creating the Blueprint was—and remains—to help independent consultants focus on what matters and eliminate what doesn't. By understanding how their businesses work as a whole, they can make informed decisions, take meaningful action, and build consulting businesses that create clients and consistent revenue so they can live life on their terms.
