Do Well Written Personalized Messages Actually Connect with Clients? YES!

Hello Reader

As I continue with the relationship video series, I thought I would highlight an older video but one I referenced in several of the videos: Personalized Messaging.

I have a number of stories that highlight the power of a personalized message. One of the stories is about a CBS interview in 2022 with Jennifer Garner and Laura Dave, the author of The Last Thing He Told Me. The purpose of the interview: promote Jennifer’s new Apple TV+’s mystery miniseries which was based on the book.

Why is it a great story? Because the initial personalized message keeps on giving.

What grabbed my attention was not the book, but Jennifer’s comments about how she was selected for the role.

Jennifer wasn’t the original person approached for the role. Actually, she wasn’t even approached for the role.
Jennifer knew about the upcoming series. As soon as she heard the original person was not available, she stayed up all night writing a personalized message to the decision makers at Apple TV+. (I’m not sure who because she didn’t say.)
She connected with them by explaining why she was memorized with the story and why she enjoyed Laura Dave’s writing. She didn’t send the letter to Laura but the letter was shared with Laura.
Not only did Jennifer get the role, Laura commented that she couldn't imagine anyone else playing the role of her beloved character Hannah Michaels in a sequel.
The keep on giving that is a result of the initial personalized message...
The book sequel, The First Time I Saw Him, is set to be published in January 2026 and a second season of the Apple TV+ series is in the works with Jennifer Garner reprising her role as Hannah Michaels.
Jennifer has become Laura Dave’s actor of choice. (Think "Consultant of Choice.")

Not all well-written personalized messages end up with the result you want but they are definitely worth the try.

Was Jennifer Garner lucky? Yes. I wouldn’t dispute she was in the right place at the right time. She has the experience and expertise for the role.

But if Jennifer had not taken the chance and written the personalized message, she would have never been considered.

What I will say is a well-written personalized message that connects with the right person is a "powerful technique all consultants should hone." Personalized messages work.

This week’s Consulting Insight explains a personalized message and provides a framework. The video is time stamped (see description area) to help you navigate to a specific topic discussed.
