Corporate to Consulting: Build Your Network as an Independent Consultant

Hello Reader

How you network and who you network with can make or break your consulting business. The challenge is many of us learned how to network in the corporate world and not as an independent consultant with our own business.

This Consulting Insight is an interview with Charlotte Anderson where she shares her perspective as to what it takes to intentionally build a supportive network when transitioning from the corporate world into consulting. Charlotte has lived the corporate-to-consulting transition. She knows firsthand the power and necessity of building a network that supports you and your business.

Charlotte Anderson is a consultant and coach who about nine years ago intentionally decided to leave her executive role in the banking industry to start her own business. I met her shortly after she started when she joined a very early version of the Consulting Mastery program.

Here are a few Key Takeaways from Our Conversation

  1. A corporate network isn’t enough. Many consultants assume existing corporate connections will sustain their business, but those relationships don’t always translate into clients or referrals. New networks must be built intentionally.
  2. The five circles of influence matter. A supportive network includes people you trust, allies, collaborators, professional resources, and your broader community. Each circle plays a unique role in your success.
  3. Networking requires intentionality. It’s not about attending every event. It’s about being curious, listening first, and building authentic relationships that create mutual value.
  4. Ideal Client clarity leads to connection. Defining your ideal client is essential. Without this clarity, it’s difficult for others to understand who to connect you with or how to support you.
  5. Be patient. It takes time to build a network. Transitioning into consulting and establishing a strong network doesn’t happen overnight. Persistence, focus, and authenticity are key to creating sustainable success.

Charlotte’s advice is both practical and encouraging: start small, be intentional, and trust that with time, your network will become one of your greatest business assets.
